The St. Augustine lighthouse towers as the tallest historical landmark of the city, and now, it’s home to something truly unique, the Tin Pickle. This new eatery at the base of the lighthouse combines fresh flavors with a rich nod to the past, and offers a modern take on the vintage sub shop. The name “Tin Pickle” has roots in World War II naval slang, where it referred to a submarine or torpedo. George Sologuren and Shepard Raines refer to the shop as a “gedunk” which simply means “snack bar” in military jargon. It’s a clever tribute to the resourcefulness and camaraderie of that era, tying in perfectly with St. Augustine’s maritime history. Inside, a museum of pickled products and vintage memorabilia with a lively and casual energy feels just right for the iconic location. Using fresh, local ingredients inspired by the region, there are plenty of options. Pickles, deli, and baked goods and a cup of refreshing sangria quench your thirst after climbing the lighthouse. Whether you’re a history lover, a foodie, or just passing by, this gedunk brings back the camaraderie of the good old days as the perfect spot to grab some chow with your buddies. Open daily from 9:00 to 6:00 PM.
