St. Johns Reads: To Kill a Mockingbird with Special Showing at Amphitheatre to Follow

Reading may be a solitary endeavor but it’s also a community event, thanks to St. Johns Reads. Sponsored by the St. Johns County Library System, this month residents are encouraged to read Harper Lee’s novel, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird.’

Some of us had to read this novel for high school English. Others weren’t allowed to read it because of its controversial language and themes. Last year, interest was reignited when the prequel, ‘Go Set a Watchman’ was released.‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ has been read and discussed by millions and has remained a strong cultural influence for more than a half-century.

All the county library branches are hosting programs (lectures, films, cooking classes, discussion groups) to delve deeper into the novel’s themes of race, justice, and life in the 1930s south.
It all culminates in a free movie night at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, On Feb. 27, a special screening of the book-inspired 1962 movie, starring Gregory Peck, will play at 7pm. Plan to be there by 6 p.m. though, because Academy-Award nominated actress Mary Badham, a.k.a. Scout, will be here to discuss her behind-the-scenes experiences during filming. Gates open at 5pm.

There are far too many book-related events to list here – but here are just a few highlights:

At the Anastasia Island Branch, join retired English Professor Dr. Keith Schlegel for ‘Book Talk’ on Feb. 16 at 4pm and Feb. 18 at 6:45pm

At the Main Branch, don’t miss the screening of “Rosewood,” at 1pm Feb. 16. Starring Jon Voight. Based on real events, the film chronicles the horrific events that played out in a Florida town in 1923, after a white woman accused a black man of sexual assault.

Also, join the book discussion on Feb. 24 at 11am

But most importantly, check out the book and get reading!
