The 2015 St. Augustine Little League season got underway on Saturday, March 7th, as over 400 boys and girls, representing 34 teams, paraded onto the field at the St. Augustine Little League Park.
SALL President Terry Dillinger was emcee for the event. After introducing the SALL Board members, he introduced all 34 teams from the various divisions.
Once all of the teams were on the field, Dillinger introduced Rachael Hutcherson to sing the National Anthem. She “hit all the high notes”, and the crowd lining the fences of the field showed their appreciation with a rousing round of applause.
With the Board introduced and the National Anthem echoing throughout St. Augustine, Alexa Gatlin, a member of the Junior League Florida Section 3 Champion Saints softball team, took the mound to throw the ceremonial “first pitch” to get the season underway.
After the Opening Day ceremony, the St. John’s County Sheriffs Office was on hand with their aerial unit, piloted by Deputies Mark Ochkie and Jason Caban. Little Leaguers had the opportunity to climb into the pilot’s seat before heading off to their first games of the season:
A number of games began not long after the Opening Day ceremonies finished, and it was obvious that the kids were ready to get to work. No matter where you walked in Little League Park, you knew you were on your way to another exciting game!
If you needed a sign that springtime was truly upon us, all you had to do was look at the smiles on the faces of all the kids eager to get on to the business of playing Little League baseball! Here is a full gallery of the day’s festivities.
