St. Augustine Art Association Hosts Summer Art Camps for Kids

Summer Art Camp

Calling all parents. The countdown is on! It’s only a matter of days until school is out for summer.

If you haven’t finalized summer plans for your kids, the St. Augustine Art Association is hosting five summer art camps to consider, kicking off in June. These camps provide a creative, engaging way for your elementary or middle school age kids to spend part of their summer, alongside fellow young creatives.

“Kids are naturally creative, and it’s always uplifting to see a room full of children plugged into art, not gadgets,” said Elyse Brady, Executive Director.

Art camp topics are inspired by master artists and St. Augustine’s 450th Anniversary. Each camp explores a different artistic medium. For grades 1 through 6, the weekly morning sessions explore painting, drawing, fabrications and mixed media projects. An afternoon session is also scheduled for students ages 12 and up.

Below is a listing of this year’s camp offerings. Registrations are currently being accepted for all sessions.

1. Camphibians
June 8-12, 9 a.m. – noon (grades 1-6)
Leap into the world of frogs with Artist Don Trousdell who inspires students to create colorful mixed media fabrications and paintings of artsy amphibians and their habitat.

2. Thread to the Past
June 15-19, 9 a.m. – noon (grades 1-6)
It’s “sew” much fun in this camp weaving personal stories into fiber totems using fabrics, pictographs and ornaments. Inspired by the art of the Native Americans.

3. Pirates of Pens & Brushes
June 22-26, 9 a.m. – noon (grades 1-6)
Boys and girls assemble swashbuckling costumes and disguises and create their own portraits using paints, pens and pictures.

4. History Super Heros
July 6-10, 9 a.m. – noon (grades 1-6)
In this 450th head-turning discovery, students transform their favorite Ancient City hero into whimsical paper mache’ big heads.

5. Monument Makers
July 6-10, 1-4 p.m. (ages 12 +)
In this afternoon session, young artists unleash their inner architects by creating fanciful sculptures inspired by famous landmarks using ceramics and found objects.
