The story of one of America’s most accomplished naval aviators is taking flight on the big screen as the Northeast Florida Regional Airport and Edwards Motion Pictures partner on a new documentary celebrating the life and legacy of Dale “Snort” Snodgrass, whose remarkable career and deep ties to St. Augustine continue to inspire the aviation community.
Known internationally as one of the U.S. Navy’s most respected fighter pilots, Snodgrass logged more than 4,800 flight hours in the legendary F-14 Tomcat and completed multiple combat deployments during his distinguished military career. He later became one of the nation’s most recognized civilian airshow performers, thrilling audiences with precision flying demonstrations while serving as an ambassador for aviation safety and education. Snodgrass attended the Navy’s elite “Top Gun” Fighter Weapons School before later serving as a instructor, placing him among the nation’s most accomplished fighter pilots. During the production of the original 1986 Top Gun film, he flew aerial sequences for the movie and became widely known as “The Real Top Gun” because of his extraordinary F-14 Tomcat career. His real-life achievements and unmatched flying skills helped reinforce the authenticity and enduring legacy of the Top Gun franchise.
St. Augustine played a significant role in Snodgrass’ life following his retirement from the Navy. He based many of his aviation activities at the Northeast Florida Regional Airport, where he became a familiar face among local pilots and aspiring young aviators. Through community appearances and educational outreach, Snodgrass helped strengthen the region’s reputation as a destination for aviation history and excellence.
The upcoming documentary aims to preserve that legacy for future generations. The filmmakers explore Snodgrass’ military achievements, his passion for flight, and the lasting impact he made on Northeast Florida’s aviation community. The project will feature interviews with fellow aviators, family members, colleagues, and friends who witnessed firsthand his commitment to aviation and mentorship. Beyond chronicling his impressive résumé, the film will highlight the personal qualities that made Snodgrass so widely admired. Fellow pilots often described him as approachable, generous with his knowledge, and eager to encourage the next generation of aviators. Whether speaking with young students, participating in airport events, or sharing stories from decades in the cockpit, Snodgrass remained deeply committed to fostering a love of aviation.
Although Snodgrass died in 2021 following an aircraft accident, his influence continues to resonate throughout the aviation world. His remarkable career, dedication to mentorship, and connection to St. Augustine ensure his story remains an important chapter in both local and national aviation history.
That legacy will take center stage on Saturday, July 18, when the Northeast Florida Regional Airport hosts a free community movie night celebrating one of St. Augustine’s most remarkable aviators. The evening begins with the premiere of Dale Snodgrass: The Real Top Gun. Following the documentary, attendees will watch the blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick under the stars, creating a fitting tribute to the man whose real-life career embodied the elite naval aviation culture that inspired generations of fighter pilots and captivated movie audiences.
