Spot Check: Brewz N Dawgz Opens in St. Augustine

If you’re like me, you like a good meal. If you’re like me, you’re able to recognize good food when it’s presented in absolute simplicity. If you’re like me, you appreciate the level of care that goes into serving food that’s not bloated with hormones and antibiotics and other stuff you probably don’t really need. And, if you’re like me, you like a really good hot dog.

Opened this past August, Brewz N Dawgs, at 1974 US1 South (in the old Staples shopping center), is a hot dog joint unlike all other hot dog joints.

Owners Roger Lim and Samantha DiTusa proudly serve food made only with fresh, local, organic and non-GMO ingredients in an atmosphere that’s more friendly neighborhood restaurant than it is hot dog stand.

Now, you might be asking yourself “Self, isn’t a hot dog a pretty simple thing?” Well, perhaps you should just pull yourself aside and give yourself a stern talking to. No, you see, it’s not a simple thing.

But, then again, it is.

I ordered up the most basic hot dog I could think of: a 100% grass-fed (and grass-finished) beef hot dog with some spicy brown mustard.

Boom.

If perfection can be found in a hot dog, I hit the mother lode. While I’m not a guy who’s normally concerned with things like additives and fillers and yadayadayada, Roger may well have started my conversion. He gave me a quick education on what makes their hot dogs so good. I don’t say this lightly: This may well have been the best hot dog I’ve ever had, and that’s sayin’ somethin’.

Their menu has nine different hot dogs, and also includes the all-important (and indulgent!) “Build Your Own Dawg” section. What’s more, Brewz N Dawgs also offers several vegetarian and gluten-free options. In fact, according to Lim, 25% of their business is vegetarian.

Vegetarians.

Now, no one should have to work their way through one of the best hot dogs on the planet without some liquid refreshment. I opted for the Sprecher draft root beer, and I can’t imagine a better pairing. Who does root beer on draft? Well, these guys, that’s who.

If you prefer an adult beverage, Brewz N Dawgs has 24 Florida craft beers on tap, as well as 140 different brands of bottled beer. They also have a comprehensive wine list if that’s where your tastes lead you.

Brewz N Dawgs offers a hot dog experience not found anywhere else. Everything is prepared fresh and exactly how you like it; you’ll find no “roller dogs” here, and the result is something you simply won’t expect from a restaurant that serves up hot dogs as their main dish.

The highest accolade I can give Brewz N Dawgz is to say that it’s has made it to my short list.

And not many do…
