RSVP Seeks Summer Reading Volunteers to Support Local Students

For community members looking to spend part of the summer making a meaningful difference, RSVP of St. Johns County has an opportunity waiting.

RSVP is currently seeking volunteers to assist once a week with the summer reading program in the St. Johns County School District. The program offers local students additional support during the summer months, helping them build confidence, strengthen reading skills, and stay connected to learning while school is out.

“There are students who can greatly benefit from the help of those willing to give just a small amount of their time,” said Cheryl Freeman, RSVP director. “Assistance from community volunteers can make all the difference in helping these students succeed.”

Through its work in St. Johns County schools and the greater community, RSVP connects volunteers with meaningful ways to support children, families, schools, and local nonprofit organizations. Many volunteers assist with academic tutoring, mentoring, reading support, pre-kindergarten reading, and special community projects. Others take part in food and clothing drives, food delivery to schools, fundraiser support, packing activity boxes for children in hospitals, and collecting necessary items for children in foster care.

This summer reading opportunity continues that mission in a simple but powerful way. Volunteers are asked to give a small amount of time once a week, with orientation provided. Background screenings will also be completed free of charge.

“As volunteers share wisdom gained through their life experiences, and most importantly share their heart with youth, a bond can take place that benefits both generations. It is a beautiful thing to see, and it happens just because someone wants to give back,” Freeman has said of the program.

As St. Johns County continues to grow, so do the opportunities to serve. RSVP’s volunteer model benefits both students and the community, creating meaningful connections that extend beyond the classroom. For a child, a little extra reading help can build skills and confidence. For a volunteer, it can become a rewarding way to give back, stay connected, and make summer count.
