Fashion is an ever-evolving market with ever-changing trends. Today’s market demands a truly savvy business owner to keep up with fashion trends and offer unique items at affordable prices. That’s where DeAnn Matza steps in.

Matza and her husband John, opened Retail Therapy in 2012. “We first set our sights on a gift and paper shop, but our research showed that area of the market already being saturated in St. Augustine. After doing some more research we decided on niche fashion.” And there you have it. Retail Therapy was born in the Anastasia Publix Plaza where it continues growing today. “Location was very important to us,” says Matza. “We knew we wanted to be island-based rather than downtown.”

All about the industry and community they serve, Matza elaborates. “We are very active in our local fashion and arts communities. We work with aspiring models and photographers to help give them a positive start in their careers.” As a way of both giving back and paying it forward, Matza and her husband host quarterly events such as pop-up shows, featuring new and established local designers. Also, as a way to keep the fashion industry’s talent pipeline thriving, Retail Therapy offers advice and counseling to students in the Fashion Academy at Bartram Trails High School. Staying true to their community spirit, Retail Therapy has been a clothing drop-off point for Betty Griffin House, and has assisted with local hurricane relief.

Of the business that makes their community efforts possible, Matza describes “We are a well-rounded, fashion-forward, trend-style boutique.” Retail Therapy is unique in that they research and find trend-setting fashion and offer it at affordable prices. They also offer unique “girlfriend gifts” generally priced under $30. The store really is an affordable gift destination.

“We have a very diverse customer base,” explains Matza. With clothing and accessories ranging from the teen to the 70+ demographic, Retail Therapy has something for every generation.
