When Rachael Hanson was growing up, she always wanted to ride horses, but it was never a hobby her mother allowed her to explore. Now as a mom herself, with a blossoming teenager trying to find her thing, she found herself with finally the perfect opportunity to saddle up, proving that when it comes to hobbies, age doesn’t really matter and when you can find something both you and your kids enjoy, life just falls into sync.
Like most teenagers, Savannah had tried many after school activities, but nothing stuck until she got on the back of a horse. Starting first with English horseback riding at Good Beginnings Riding Center. English riding is more traditional and “proper”, and is used for equestrian activities like dressage and show jumping, which Savannah excelled. But it was at the annual Cracker Day held at the Agricultural Center in Palm Coast, where she saw friend Lilly Nettles barrel racing and she said “I want to do that!”
They switched to Western riding at Meant to be Equestrian, introducing her to “cowboy-style” riding, where riders place their emphasis on speed and agility. Learning that skill in your 40s might seem impossible, but with the encouragement of her trainer, Hannah Gibbs, she is consistently taking lessons twice a week.
Rachael says “This horse thing has really changed my life. A spark has been lit inside of me at 45 years old and feel so lucky to have found a new passion, something that excites me that I get to share with my daughter.”
Horseback riding is a workout for the brain and body, improving memory and problem-solving skills, while strengthening core muscles and overall balance. It can also boost confidence, reduce boredom, and provide a sense of accomplishment. For Rachael, it’s done all of the above and been ‘the best workout she’s ever experienced.’
Now Rachael finds camaraderie with her barn family and finds herself a part of a sort of mother-daughter group that gives these women something in common with their daughters that is rare in their teenage years. “I know when my day comes these days will be some of my favorite memories. Even today when my horse tried to kill me!” laughs Rachael.
