Ovico Gallery Opens Art Exhibit Celebrating African-American Culture

The work of Black artists, both local and global, provide a unique perspective to form artful expression. The artwork shows what Black artists want to portray coming from their own artistic vision of their upbringing. Black History Month is a special month for African and African-Americans to show off their art pieces for the celebration. St. Augustine exhibit Ovico Gallery plans to celebrate the month by showcasing the achievements of Black Artists.

Ovico Gallery is an art exhibit for African and African-American artists to share their unique cultural perspective in an artform for all to see. The space is owned by Nigerian-born Ugochi Nwoga and Chike Onuorah. Nwoga’s lifelong love for art – particularly, African art – led her to establish Ovico Gallery in St. Augustine. With the gallery, Onuorah has the chance to use the space to show off his career’s worth of work to celebrate his culture and for Black History Month. The opportunity led Onuorah to present his art pieces called Contemporary Masterpieces which is an ever-rotating collection of artwork by Onuorah. He is renowned for his bold use of color and wide range of subjects and styles informed by his world travels and raw talent. “This is my passion, my job, my hobby, my life, my everything,” he says. His work will feature his African influence to be displayed for all to see at the gallery.

“At Ovico Gallery, art serves as a powerful means of expression, telling stories that resonate within the soul – in our case, the true heartbeat of Africa,” reveals Nwoga. “This space truly is the manifestation of the dream to showcase the excellence and uniqueness of contemporary African art to the world. With a lot of hard work, we have expanded our reach to various people, entities, and countries and have had fun doing so.” The display of the collection will kick off an open house on Thursday, February 1st from 5:30pm to 8:30pm at 2802 North 5th Street, Suite 4, in Saint Augustine. There will be live music, refreshments, and cocktails for all. The event is free and a chance for everyone to learn about the Ovico Gallery while celebrating Black History Month. In addition, the gallery plans to host a Corporate Week February 18th through 24th for companies and organizations to learn about the initiative of the art exhibit.
