First Coast Opera is presenting an ensemble of bone-chilling tunes to elicit the spirit of Halloween at their performance, Opera’s Most Haunting Melodies.
St. Augustine’s mix of history and ghost stories embodies the perfect eerie backdrop for the program. Expect a spellbinding performance with a focus on Halloween themes of ghosts, witches, “mad scenes,” and more frightful acts during the first half. Curtis Tucker, Artistic Director at First Coast Opera, says “one of the highlights will be a staging of the séance scene from Gian Carlo Menotti’s, “The Medium”. The scene is eerie and spooky, while also showing that things aren’t always as they seem.”
Following intermission, Curtis has planned “operatic melodies that haunt us because of their ability to stick with us.” He says, “we might call them ear worms…”: those songs that seem to repeat over and over again in our minds.
Most of the eight performers will be dressed in traditional concert attire, but a few may be robed in costumes and makeup. The show is appropriate for all ages, and the audience is invited to wear costumes and join in the spirit of the evening.
Come out for an evening of ominous opera in the oldest city. Your ears will be satisfied with selections from musical theater and many of opera’s most recognized ensemble numbers.
The event will last about two hours including intermission. Tickets are $35 per person, and two performances are scheduled: October 27th at 7:30 p.m. at Mark Lance Armory in St. Augustine and October 29th at 4 p.m. at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall
