Local Youth Sports Programs Keeping Kids Active and Engaged

When they’ve spent all day in their halls of learning, there’s nothing better for kids than to enjoy a little bit of fresh air and sunshine. Now you could always order the little ones into the backyard or bring back the classic don’t-let-me-see-you-until-the-streetlights-come-on directive, but if you want to pass on skills of teamwork and discipline in addition to health benefits, then signing on for a fall athletics program is a great choice.

The Police Athletic League (PAL) is one of the oldest character-driven youth organizations in the country, and the St. Johns County chapter has been in operation since 1991. Sheriff Neil Perry wanted to instill PAL’s values — positive attitudes, trust, and respect — in the children of the community, and that legacy has been carried on to this day as St. Johns County PAL organizes teams and coaches the next generation of athletes on to greatness. Their summer camp season is coming to a close, but tackle football and cheer are getting into high gear.

For the little athletes who are fast on their feet, the Ancient City Soccer Club caters to a variety of skill levels and commitments. The recreational program, for kids ages 4 through 18, celebrates soccer development and a love of the game; they’ll get to learn and grow as players while they make friends and solidify valuable life lessons. The academy program is designed for U7 through U12 players who are looking for progressive soccer training; technical skills will set a foundation for the future of their game. Skilled U10 through U12 players who are looking to level up can turn to the competitive program, where teams will compete in 2-3 tournaments per season all around Northeast Florida.

If your kids prefer to step up to the plate and swing for a homerun, they can try out with St. Augustine Little League for softball and baseball teams of all ages.

And if the more extreme BMX tracks are where they feel at home, Ancient City BMX will let them join the races. Registration dates, tryout times, and practice schedules vary among organizations and leagues, so make sure to check websites early so you don’t miss the registration window.
