Tis the season to sparkle, and downtown St. Augustine has perfected lighting the night – and the entire town for that matter! The famous Spanish tradition of displaying a white candle in the window during Christmas began a rich history that now includes more than three million lights adorning every corner of the historic district for two months. Even the lighthouse gets involved!
The 30th Annual Nights of Lights display brings visitors from around the world to enjoy the magnificent display illuminating historic downtown from November 18th to January 28th. “Light-Up Night!” kicks things off on November 18th at 6:30pm as the colorfully lit Christmas tree in the center of the Plaza de la Constitución is joined by strings of white lights draped over every tree throughout historic downtown. Shops are aglow with holiday cheer until January 31, 2024. Seasonal tours on all the city’s trains and trolleys will showcase the best from the bayfront and beyond. Specialty tours offer options from walking to electric cart tours, by boat and even by plane.
The St. Augustine Lighthouse adds its sparkle to the festivities with Lighthouse Illuminations: Tides, Tidings, & Trees.Available on select days from November 22nd to January 13th. A 90-minute tour explores the Keeper’s house and grounds, where 20 beautifully and uniquely decorated trees await. The highlight of the evening is the opportunity to climb the tower to view St. Augustine’s Nights of Lights display across the river. Admission is $24.95 for all adults and teens and $22.95 for children 12 and under.
The Ximenez-Fatio House Museum and St. Augustine Art Association present festive displays on the fireplace walls of the historic property from November 18th through January 5th. The museum is open from 10am -5pm Monday through Saturday.
The St. Augustine Beach Pier Park hosts its annual Surf Illumination on December 2nd from 4-7pm. Enjoy the lighting of the St. Augustine Beach Christmas tree amid holiday music. Arts and crafts vendors will sell their wares as children’s activities (think balloon twister!) bring merriment to the pier. Santa and Mrs. Claus will also be on hand for those who must have Christmas photos. Donate a toy or two to the Toy Drive for Foster Children in St. Johns County.
