For many young performers, theatre begins as a simple spark- an after-school class or summer camp that opens the door to something bigger. For Jasmine Mauer and Sydney Taisey, that spark has grown into a full-fledged passion. This December, the two will share the title role in Annie at Limelight Theatre, stepping into the shoes of one of Broadway’s most enduring and recognizable characters.
First premiering on Broadway in 1977, Annie has become a cornerstone of American musical theatre, beloved for its optimism, memorable songs like “Tomorrow,” and its story of resilience during the Great Depression. Taking on the role is no small feat- Annie demands strong vocals, emotional range, and the stamina to carry a production. That’s why many theatres, including Limelight, double-cast the role, allowing young performers to share the responsibility while building confidence and skill.
Both Jasmine and Sydney are students in Limelight’s Youth Education Program, which has become a vital part of the theatre’s mission to nurture the next generation of performers. Over the years, they’ve honed their abilities in singing, dancing, and acting on the very stage they’ll now headline. Their journey reflects a broader trend in community theatre, where youth programs provide not only artistic training but also a sense of belonging and discipline that extends beyond the stage. While each performer brings her own interpretation to Annie- whether through vocal style, physicality, or emotional nuance—the shared role has created an environment of collaboration rather than competition. Rehearsals have become a space where they learn from one another, refining their performances while building a genuine friendship. That dynamic mirrors the essence of theatre itself: a collective effort where individual talents come together to create something larger.
For Limelight Theatre, this production represents more than a holiday show. Founded in 1992, the nonprofit has long served as a cultural hub in St. Augustine, offering a mix of classic plays, contemporary works, and educational programming. Productions like Annie highlight the organization’s commitment to community storytelling—where local audiences can watch young talent grow in real time. As the curtain rises this December, audiences won’t just see a familiar story- they’ll witness the culmination of years of dedication, mentorship, and creative growth. And in the hands of two rising performers, Annie’s timeless message will feel especially real: with heart, resilience, and a supportive community, the sun really will come out tomorrow.
