Chiropractic care is not just for adults suffering from back and neck pain. With the compassion and experience of the right doctors, even children who require a higher level of care can benefit from the effects of chiropractic medicine. Just ask Faith Corley. Her son Ethan has been blessed by the devotion of Dr. Leroy Dickman II–known to patients as “Dr. Roy”– at Compass Family Chiropractic. In treatment from a young age for autism and ADHD, chiropractic care has been a miraculous supplement to Ethan’s standard treatments. With improved sleep, mood, and motor skills, Ethan’s life has seen exponential improvement since Dr. Roy and his team at Compass Family Chiropractic have entered it. Here, Faith speaks to how her connection to Dr. Roy opened a door for her son, and eventually her family, to find the results they were seeking through chiropractic care. Dr. Roy’s nervous-system-focused approach allows his practice to address a myriad of issues that extend beyond muscle-pain and soreness.
“My oldest son, Ethan, struggles with Autism and ADHD,” says Faith Corley, “I’ve always been keen to research and implement a diverse range of systems to help him with that part of his life, with physical and occupational therapy, and through chiropractic care with Dr. Roy. I’ve seen firsthand that the effects of chiropractic care extend beyond muscle and pain relief.” Faith recalls, “Ethan didn’t sleep through the night until he was 19 months old. As a child, Ethan would be a chronic early riser, always waking up before five in the morning, often times earlier. The morning after his first adjustment, when we woke up at 6:30 and Ethan was still asleep in bed, my husband and I were astonished, to say the least. I hadn’t realized just how much his body being out of alignment could affect that. I’ve noticed since we’ve started treatment, his quality of sleep has notably improved, as well. After adjustments, he’ll experience uninterrupted sleep.” “Dr. Roy does a great job of working with Ethan and making him feel comfortable,” Faith says. “Some parts of the adjustments that can tend to be overstimulating, such as what Ethan dubs ‘the twisty things,’ are often discussed openly between Ethan and Roy, and Ethan knows what he’s walking into, and what to expect every session. Over time, the two have built a rapport, which is vital for Ethan’s ability to trust the process. He knows when he goes in that he doesn’t have to be afraid, that it’s not going to hurt, and that he can communicate his needs and be heard. That’s so important to Ethan; that he knows what to expect.”
Faith enjoys the family-centered environment at Compass Chiropractic, saying, “I love that they have the children’s room to keep my other children occupied and entertained, so they can go in and play in a safe environment, and I can focus on being with Ethan.” Faith also appreciates the attentiveness to Ethan’s needs. “When I go back with Ethan, he’ll ask if he can have his adjustment done without the face paper that protects the table, as he doesn’t like the way it feels on his skin. Dr. Roy always makes these concessions, offering to simply wipe the table down when they’re done.” “Ethan had some pretty significant gross motor delays, with things such as his balance and gait, and a speech delay that we’ve used speech therapy to address. It was encouraging when we started seeing improvements even in those areas, too, as his treatment has overlapped with physical and occupational therapy. Seeing this markedly accelerated improvement has been a tremendous relief as a mother.”
