So, what exactly is happening in celebration of St. Augustine’s 450th? If you’ve been wondering what the city’s 450th birthday party is going to look like, an announcement made yesterday by The City of St. Augustine and St. Johns County Cultural Events Division has provided details for the street and music festival component of Celebrate 450!
Celebrate 450! Downtown’s Street and Music Festival
Celebrate 450! Street and Music Festival is set to take place Friday-Sunday, September 4-6, 2015. Music headliners include: Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, Aaron Neville, Mavis Staples, JJ Grey & Mofro, and Justin Townes Earle.
Following yesterday’s headliners announcement, an official press release was distributed providing an outline of events:
Friday, September 4: Aaron Neville and Mavis Staples
Headliners will be featured on Friday and Saturday nights on the festival’s main stage which will be located on the bayfront. Featured on Friday night, September 4, are Aaron Neville and Mavis Staples.
Saturday, September 5: Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell, JJ Grey & Mofro, Justin Townes Earle
Saturday night’s lineup is packed with something-for-everyone musical entertainment with performances by Justin Townes Earle, JJ Grey and Mofro, and Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell.
In addition to the headliners, the street and music festival lineup includes over 40 performers scheduled across five stages in the downtown area, from Aviles St. north to the City Gate. In the lineup of cultural performers are ones with national, regional and local followings. In addition, the festival will have international performers with the inclusion of three bands from Avilés, Spain, The Morrigans, Alexandra in Grey and Tejedor.
Included in the local cultural and music programming are Fort Mose Historical Society, St. Photios Greek Orthodox National Shrine, Menorcan Cultural Society, West African Drum Circles of St. Augustine, Fuego Flamenco Dance Troupe, Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind, Jeffrey Spear with The First Coast Heritage Cookbook, the St. Augustine Sister City Association, among many other community groups and organizations.
The St. Johns County Cultural Events Division, a 450th Commemoration Alliance Partner, worked with the city to secure entertainment and will assist with logistical support for the street and music festival.
Music Festival hours:
Friday, September 4: 3:00pm-10:00pm
Saturday, September 5: 11:00am-11:00pm
Sunday, September 6: 12:00pm-2:00pm
Most stages will be located in a pedestrian-only area bounded by Orange St., Cordova St., Cathedral Pl., and Avenida Menendez. The main stage will be located on the bayfront at Ponce Circle, just east of the Plaza de la Constitución and will feature a large audience area where alcohol purchases and consumption will be permitted. Other venues include Avilés St., Hypolita St., the Colonial Quarter and the Plaza’s Gazebo. All of the entertainment portions of Celebrate 450! are free. Stage performance schedules, recognizing each stage partner, will be available shortly.
The pedestrian-only area will be in place each night from 6:00pm until approximately 11:00pm. All times are subject to change based on safety assessment by the St. Augustine Police Department.
Celebrate 450! is scheduled for Friday through Tuesday, September 4-8, and includes a number of programs throughout the city including reenactments, processions, a commemorative Mass, and cutting and serving of the birthday cake.
