Even with nationwide floral services that will deliver arrangements to any part of the world in less than a day, the friendly neighborhood florist will never go out of style. They are the place you scramble to to score a dozen roses before you pickup your date for a romantic evening or for a last minute centerpiece for Grandma’s dining room table before Thanksgiving dinner.
Flowers By Shirley has been St. Augustine’s friendly neighborhood florist since September 1st, 1981. Shirley Sierra first opened shop in Jacksonville in 1973 but after three years of operating in both cities, Sierra sold her Jacksonville location in 1984 and has been operating solely in the Ancient City ever since. With the help of her son, Wendell Revis, who is co-owner and the shop manager, Flowers By Shirley has become a neighborhood landmark.
“We are very community-oriented,” says Sierra. “For the past seventeen years we have been adorning the Salvation Army Dinners for free. We also provide arrangements to local churches at cost.” Sierra’s community impact even extends beyond the floral world. “For 5 years, we put 58,000 holiday lights up around town for no labor cost with the help of Sertoma Club (Service To Mankind),” says Sierra, a kind gesture that she first extended in 1981 due to the city’s lack of funding for Nights of Lights.
With Flowers By Shirley’s many awards, Sierra knows that there are many people to thank for the success they have experienced. “My mission has always been to serve God and my community with great enthusiasm,” she emphasizes. “My son Wendell has been a valued part of the business. I just want to thank everyone for their continued support.” The quality of their work speaks for itself. Sierra remembers, “I started with 78 cents and a lot of faith. It is that faith and the dedication of our customers that has helped us persevere in both the good and bad times.”
