Girl Scouts of Gateway Council (GSGC) announced it has launched a reimagined summer camp program aimed at helping girls continue learning and growing despite COVID-19 restrictions. As a community service, GSGC has opened the program to nonmember girls in our community.“We are creating new traditions with our reimagined 2020 summer camp experience,” said Mary Anne Jacobs, CEO of Girl Scouts of Gateway Council. “The program is designed to bring learning and skill-building to girls, wherever they are.”
The reimagined summer camp will offer 12 week-long programs to engage girls in at-home activities and continue to learn and connect with their peers and mentors. Each themed week will give girls the opportunity to earn badges and gain experience around topics like journalism, outdoors, art, photography, theater, computer programming, STEM and more. Sessions are scheduled Monday through Friday with program content from subject matter experts, along with independent activity work. Program cost includes any earned badges, a fun patch, a T-shirt and necessary materials and supplies.
At-home camp and program opportunities are available to all girls, even if they are not already registered Girl Scouts. These programs fulfill a critical need for social engagement and educational enrichment at a time when many traditional camps and in-person activities are canceled or restricted.
Since March, Girl Scouts of Gateway Council has been creating interactive, online programs to help girls stay connected to the Girl Scout experience and their troops. These sessions included educational, entertainment, exercise, and other activities to provide girls an engaging complement to traditional virtual learning.
“The need for Girl Scout programming and involvement is greater now than ever,” said Jacobs. “These programs are designed to fight isolation, loneliness and brain-drain which are common in a typical summer and may be more prevalent because of the restrictions imposed because of the global pandemic.”
