The town was abuzz with the announcement of the children’s museum concept. So, what is the latest? Executive Director Kim MacEwan gives us the scoop.
In what stage of development is the museum? We’re so excited that our office has just relocated to the site of our new home at the St. Augustine Shipyard, located at 76 Dockside Drive. Besides being the new home for tag! Children’s Museum, the new Marine Merchant Community located off US1 behind Target will include dry boat storage, wet slips and a pedestrian “promenade” offering a variety of shops, restaurants and lodging.
When is tag! expected to break ground?
We are currently making architectural adjustments to our design to plan for future growth and hope to be breaking ground in a matter of months. It is imperative to make sure we are looking at every aspect before we break ground on a facility that will provide innovation and creativity for the generations. We expect construction to begin by October and be open before the end of 2017 pending any unforeseen construction delays.
What are some development activities happening now? This is an exciting time for us and we’re very busy! The design team is working diligently on the exhibits to create a fun, unique and educational experience for everyone. We are also putting the finishing touches on architectural plans as we continue to get input from our national experts on growth and innovative exhibit design, curriculum and program development as well as green building and safety guidelines.
Are there any community events going on? Yes! Workshops aligned with our five areas of focus – 1) STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math), 2) Environmental Stewardship, 3) Culture and History, 4) Health and Wellness, and 5) Citizenship and Compassion – began in December of 2015 at our new office location. The tag! Team continues to provide community outreach through school and community events.
How can locals help? Volunteers and community support are vital pieces of what it takes to bring tag! Children’s Museum’s vision to life. Check the tag! website and Facebook page to learn about their ongoing community events, volunteer opportunities and ways to donate.
