Around here, the name Gamble Rogers is synonymous with good music, which is unsurprising given the man’s highly successful, decades-long career in the industry. But for those who are more familiar with his repertoire and his life, the reputation extends far beyond captivating folk ballads and addictive melodies. Gamble Rogers was as much a storyteller as he was a musician, reveling in the tradition of the region and calling himself a “modern-day troubadour.” Even as he appeared on national television shows, in documentaries, and on public radio; wrote plays and a screenplay; even recorded narration for presentations at the Kennedy Space Center — he continued to embody the zeitgeist of our region. He valued humanism,
philosophy, and community for his whole life.
It seems appropriate then that one of his legacies around here is a yearly festival that brings together musical artists and audiences from all Gamble Rogers over for a celebration of song, community, and the Florida legend that inspired its name. Over three days and on four stages, the Gamble Rogers Folk Festival will feature dozens of performers as well as a songwriters circle and an “I Remember Gamble” contest with songs and stories. In the midst of all the music, you’ll find food trucks, local arts and crafts vendors, and plenty of activities for the kids. If you really feel like immersing yourself in the festivities, you can take your RV or tent to the event and camp out.
The Gamble Rogers Folk Festival will take place at St. Johns County Fairgrounds on April 14-16. You can purchase day passes for $30 on Friday and Sunday and $60 for Saturday or a weekend pass for $90.
