On the first Friday of every month, St. Augustine’s art galleries welcome visitors to browse the latest art exhibits and enjoy refreshments and live entertainment at more than 25 participating galleries. For lovers of local art and culture, the First Friday Artwalk is a great way to celebrate both the start of a new month and the end of a long week. Spend your time hopping from gallery to gallery in the downtown area or jump on a complimentary shuttle and check out the galleries on the beach. But wherever you decide to spend your time, here’s what’s new at the February 2, 2018 First Friday Artwalk.
Grand Re-Opening of High Tide Gallery
High Tide Gallery is a 14-year established local art gallery – formerly in Uptown St. Augustine – now entering a new chapter as a gallery on the island, grouped together with several other nearby official Artwalk galleries like Simple Gestures, Hubley Gallery and The Gallery Group. Next door popular cafe Creative Juices will open that evening for the celebration, and live music and refreshments will be offered.
High Tide Gallery is now open at 850 Anastasia Boulevard in the light blue building of Lighthouse Plaza. There is free parking in front, along A1A and also behind Lighthouse Plaza. Customers and media parking in the back may use the breezeway alongside Creative Juices to come to the front of the building for entrance.
Haitian Oil Drum Art at Amistad
Join Amistad to explore their newest and expanded Haitian Oil Drum Art collection. Using just a hammer and chisel, Haitian artists create magnificent sculptures using recycled 55-gallon oil drums. What started many years ago as a simple art creating tombstone crosses, has now evolved into a unique art form that highlights the creativity and resourcefulness of the artists from Croix des Bouquet, Haiti.
Also stop by and enjoy a complimentary sampling of delicious artisan wines from family-owned vineyards, from around the world.
The Art of Lorraine Millspaugh at Sea Spirits Gallery
From 5-9pm, featured artist Lorraine Millspaugh will not only be showing her Florida wildlife inspired creations, but she will actually be on site painting and demonstrating her techniques. We invite you to come chat with her at Sea Spirits Gallery, south of the Plaza. Lorraine, or Lori, will welcome you in person and tell you about her techniques and the stories behind her individual pieces.
Lorraine uses mostly acrylic with glazes and molding pastes. She specializes in White Herons, Birds and Beaches, and Sea Turtles swaying to the gentle steering currents of the sea. She uses vibrant contrasts to catch the light in her life-like renderings. Lorraine takes photographs first and translates the beauty and emotional aspects of each subject skillfully into her fascinating paintings.
If you are unable to attend the First Friday Art Walk event, be sure to visit the gallery later to view her fantastic work. The paintings will be on view from February 2nd until March 2nd, 2018.
Not-So-Still Life at St. Augustine Art Association
The art of still life is as popular today as it was centuries ago. This exhibit invites artists to push the limits of composition, concept, color, light, and drama within the realm of the still life genre. Local artists have submitted their still life pieces for judging and the awards ceremony will take place at 7pm at the February First Friday Artwalk. The pieces will be on display until the end of the month.
