There is a startling number of 6,000+ seniors who are hungry here, in St. Johns County. Every two weeks Pie in the Sky, a local non-profit, has volunteers who bag fresh produce, load it in their trunks, and deliver it to the door of each senior on their route. From the farmhouse down a dirt road, unchanged for decades, to a home going up in rent on the outskirts of downtown St. Augustine, produce is left carefully on the doorsteps. Seniors have thanked Pie in the Sky not only for the biweekly knock on the door with fresh groceries but for the opportunity to have a conversation and end social isolation. Fresh produce is given to local seniors for less than $2.00 per day, per senior. Currently with a route of 680, there is a waiting list for produce. Pie in the Sky was founded in 2009 to fill the needs that have fallen through the cracks. They worked hard to do everything from building wheelchair ramps, ferrying farm workers to doctor appointments, and baking pies for funds. Seniors were asked what they needed most and they echoed the need for fresh produce they could no longer afford because of the rise in inflation. With a growing route and food supply, volunteers are needed to bag groceries and drive them to the doors of the seniors in this county. Pie in the Sky is making it possible to end the hunger of seniors just miles from our own homes.
