Eagle Scout Matthew Hanvey from Troop 63 recently donated $1,214 to the St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum, in addition to raising $1,825.59 for a new Butterfly Garden that he and other Eagle Scouts built this summer on the grounds, located near the 1876 Keepers’ House.
Guests and staff are enjoying spotting various butterflies including the Tiger Swallowtail, the Painted Lady, the Cloudless Sulfur, and the Zebra Longwing. Flowers planted to attract the butterflies are Lantana, Pentas, Fennel, Milkweed, Salvia, and Blue Porterweed.
“I really enjoyed this project. As project manager, I was in charge of raising $1,500 in sponsorships for the Butterfly Garden project,” explained Michael Hanvey. “The materials for the project totaled $1,469.56. I also purchased supplies and incidentals for $356.03.”
Rick Cain, Director of Museum Services and Head Lighthouse Keeper, oversees scout projects at the nonprofit Museum. Other Eagle Scout projects have included widening of the nature trails and a bench in the maritime hammock by Kyle Andrews of Troop 345; and a wildlife identification billboard created by Laric Pulak (Lawrence Patrick-Sanger Pulak) of Troop 312.
