A new skate park is in the works for St. Augustine Beach and the committee leading the efforts is calling for your help.
There is a group of very instrumental members of our community banding together all in the name of skateboarding – and they could use your help too. Lenny Byrd is a member of the Citizens for Ron Parker Park, a non-profit organization formed to raise money to bring a skateboarding park to St. Augustine Beach. He says “I joined his effort late fall of 2015 and have been a skater for over 40 years.” While the concept of the park was originally the idea of Chief Rob Hardwick of the St. Augustine Beach Police Department, he is joined by many others, like Byrd, who would like to see a place for kids (and adults) to skate in a safe, designated location.
The proposed 15,000 sq. ft. skate park will be a part of a redevelopment master plan for Ron Parker Memorial Park located off Pope Road. In an effort to use zero taxpayer dollars, the non-profit was formed to fundraise for the project. The group is made up of several committees that are helping with the fundraising, land planning, and general organization of the project
If all goes as planned they will break ground on the park in mid 2017. To get involved by donating or volunteering your time to support the efforts, contact Lenny Byrd at (386) 986-8565.
