One of the rules of improvisation is to always say ‘yes, and…’. Amy Angelilli said yes to a new improv space and for a community to come together for bonding. She wanted to establish a studio in downtown St. Augustine for community members of all abilities to create and connect. With the hard work, committed core of students, and money in Angelilli’s pocket, Third Space Improv opened its doors. Third Space Improv’s belief is that everyone should have three spaces – the first, home; the second, work; and the third, a communal space where people can come together and bond over a special interest. In January, Third Space Improv celebrated two events: The Open Space and the official Grand Opening Open House. The creative community space didn’t want anyone to feel left out on these occasions. With the assistance of a State of the Arts (SOTA) Grant from the St. Johns Cultural Center, Third Space Improv constructed an ADA-accessible stage. In celebration, the party guests were invited to watch or join the improv every 30 minutes. “It’s surreal to see all of the hard work and long days come together.” Angelilli said. “We couldn’t have done it without the support of the St. Johns Cultural Council, friends, family, and the improv students; so many people have played a critical role in getting Third Space Improv to this place. We’re thrilled to open a studio that welcomes and accommodates all community members.”
Improv might feel daunting to most people to step out of their comfort zone, but the guiding hands of Third Space Improv can help shake off those fears. “Improv can help you get out of your head, live in the moment, build self-confidence, and make new friends,” says Angelilli. The creative community space has a tight schedule for all to experience. They offer six-level improv classes, community events, improv comedy shows, organization team building, and un.scripted experiences. Fit for everyone to have a good laugh on or off the stage. Third Space Improv wants the continued support to improve their space. Their running crowdfund is to assist with renovation costs, seating, signage, licensing, and more. Their website provides how to donate and look up their classes, events, and performances. The space is located at 200 Malaga Street, Suite 7, in downtown St. Augustine.
