If you’ve ever navigated downtown St. Augustine during peak season (dodging trolleys, horse-drawn carriages, and tourists on foot) you know transportation here is anything but simple. On Friday, May 8th, at 9am, the St. Augustine City Commission will hold a public workshop in the Alcazar Room at City Hall to talk about it. The focus: proposed updates to ordinances governing Vehicles for Hire and tour franchises and the rules that shape how transportation and tour services operate throughout the city.
This isn’t just a procedural check-in. Topics on the table include potential caps on the number of Vehicles for Hire allowed to operate, updates to tour franchise structures, enhanced driver requirements, and new measures aimed at supporting horse carriage welfare. Together, these changes could meaningfully reshape how residents and visitors experience getting around and how local tour operators do business.
The potential caps on Vehicles for Hire may be the most closely watched item on the agenda. Any changes to how many can operate (and under what conditions) will likely have ripple effects for tour companies, their employees, and the neighborhoods they move through. The horse carriage provisions are equally noteworthy, reflecting both community values and a recognition that the city’s working horses deserve intentional oversight.
The workshop is open to the public, and if a 9am Friday meeting doesn’t fit your schedule, it’ll be available for live viewing online and on demand the following day.
