On a street known for historic landmarks, souvenir stops and resort wear, Buck’s Boutique offers a different kind of find: boots, corsets, denim, western-inspired dresses and pint-sized clothing for children who may be just as likely to grow up around a fishing pole or a horse barn as a beach towel.
The small St. George Street shop describes its style as “country couture,” a fitting phrase for a collection that moves easily between concert attire, cowgirl style and outdoorsy children’s wear. It is a look that feels familiar to many residents west of U.S. 1, as well as shoppers from Flagler County and visitors headed to a show at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre.
For owner Danielle, the concept grew from a life already shaped by horses, hunting, fishing and the local equestrian community. The store’s name is not, as some customers assume, a reference to the antlers and rustic touches on the walls. Buck is her horse.
“People think it’s Buck because of the bucks on the wall,” she says. “But Buck is actually named after Buck, my horse.”
The shop itself began as an unexpected mother-daughter venture. Danielle, who had worked in real estate for years, learned that the business occupying the space was for sale. Around the same time, she was considering what might come next for her daughter Katie, then preparing for what’s next after her high school graduation.
“We had no idea what we were doing. We just winged it from day one.”
They found their footing by following their own instincts. Katie, now 22, helped define much of the store’s visual personality, appearing in photos and modeling the clothes that gave Buck’s its youthful, western-leaning identity. Though she has since shifted her attention to Salty Spur, her own shark-tooth jewelry business, and competitive barrel racing, Danielle still sees the shop as her daughter’s baby.
“She’s so good at it,” Danielle says of Katie’s eye for style and social media. “All the clothes and all of that, that’s her.”
That digital presence has helped a tucked-away downtown shop reach far beyond St. Augustine. Buck’s Boutique has built a sizable TikTok following, with more than 100,000 followers at the time of the interview, and its sales are split between its brick-and-mortar location and online customers. Orders have traveled as far as Australia and Canada; Danielle recalls one Australian visitor arriving in the store with a list of items to take home.
Still, she would like more locals to know the shop is there.
That sense of discovery is a familiar refrain among downtown business owners, particularly those whose storefronts sit just beyond the most heavily traveled paths. Danielle regularly hears from St. Augustine residents who wander in during wine walks or while exploring St. George Street and say they had no idea Buck’s existed.
The assumption that every downtown shop is out of reach for local shoppers can be hard to shake, she says. Buck’s offers a standing 10 percent discount for locals, and Danielle works to keep the store’s pricing approachable while stocking pieces that cannot be easily found elsewhere in town.
“I want to have repeat customers,” she says. “I don’t want to be known as that shop” where visitors feel overcharged.
Its merchandise has grown along with the customers who first came through the door looking for baby gifts. The shop originally carried clothing through 18 months, then added 2T, 3T and now 4T. Danielle expects the racks may keep expanding as returning families come back each year.
“They come in and say, ‘We just come to stop into your store,’” she says. “I tell them, next year you’re probably going to come in and it’s going to be 5T.”
That willingness to let the store evolve has become part of Buck’s identity. Danielle shops whenever she has time between her real estate work and the demands of the boutique, choosing pieces that strike her as fun, wearable and true to the shop’s point of view. A pair of boots might appeal to a local horsewoman; a fringe or corset look may be headed to an Amp concert; a tiny fishing-themed outfit could leave with a family on vacation.
For all its online reach, Buck’s Boutique remains rooted in that mix of St. Augustine life: a little country, a little coastal, and always full of people who know a good find when they see one.
