Bloody Mary Taste Test Tour: Kingfish Grill

It seems like only yesterday I started little project and, yet, here we are. We’ve reached the end of the St. Augustine Bloody Mary Taste Test Tour.  I won’t lie: It’s been fun.

Through all of this, I endeavored to simply offer a glimpse into what various establishments in St. Augustine can do with what is, frankly, my favorite cocktail. I’ve had Bloody Mary’s from San Diego to New York City and from Toronto to Las Vegas, and I’m convinced that we get it right, over and over again, here in St. Augustine.  So, to end this series off, we’ll make a left just before we head over the bridge to Vilano Beach, bear to the right into the parking lot and head back to the Kingfish Grill.

Adam St. Simons has been at Kingfish for two of the ten years he’s spent bar tending, and he was all too happy to provide me with yet another stellar version of my favorite cocktail. He explained that it’s a house recipe, and it’s not deviated from, at least in any great respect. I could, of course, get a couple more olives or another lime wedge, but the recipe for the sippin’ part stays the same.

The list of ingredients for the Kingfish Bloody Mary reads like a “who’s who” of Bloody Mary wonderment:

  • Tomato juice
  • Horseradish
  • Black pepper
  • Hot sauce (I saw a bottle of Tabasco on the bar)
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Celery salt
  • Lime wedge
  • Lemon wedge
  • Olive
  • Celery stalk (a nice tall one, too, which is nice to see)

Along with all of that, they use Old Bay seafood seasoning around the rim to reach out and bite ya’ a little bit. I have to be honest: I’ve become a fan; a big fan.

The house vodka for the Kingfish Bloody Mary is Crystal Palace, but popular call vodkas are Grey Goose and Kettle One. The house vodka works quite well, though. And, while I won’t quote any prices, I can tell you that this Bloody Mary is an outright bargain if you order it during Happy Hour.

I’m glad that I made the decision to not to name a “Best” in all of this. It just would’ve been too difficult to do. What I’m comfortable saying is that, regardless of where you order your Bloody Mary, if you choose one of these six, you’re going to be more than satisfied.
