It’s clear that Matthews Design Group is focused on people. They’ve been recognized nationally and locally as one of the best places to work. Jacksonville Business Journal recently listed Matthews Design Group in their annual “Best Places to Work” feature and the Zweig Group included them on the list, “Best Firms to Work For.”
Founded in 2005 by Rob Matthews, the business has seen substantial growth. The company that started with two employees now employs 30 individuals, and serves clients throughout Northeast Florida. Matthews believes, “the heart of any company is its people.” He’s created a company culture that makes Matthews Design Group a, “professional, yet fun-spirited place to work where employees feel valued, respected, and empowered.” The positive work environment attracts top talent in the field and equates to happy employees, and, thereby, happy clients.
Initially providing land development and civil engineering services, they have since diversified into other engineering services. “It was through the diversification of project types and clients that Matthews Design Group was able to survive the great recession and come out stronger today.” A few of their iconic projects in Northeast Florida from include the River House, new Flagler College Dormitories and Parking Garage (the former FEC Railroad Building), the Ice Plant bar and restaurant, and the new Diane’s Marketplace.
Matthews says his favorite part of running a design firm is facilitating change within St. Augustine. “Whether working to improve the drainage for one lot or an entire neighborhood, we are actively working to better our community.”
Matthews Design Group has donated their professional services to non-profits such as the Boys & Girls Club, St. Augustine Youth Services, Alpha Omega Miracle Home, ARC of St. Johns and many others. They frequently sponsor fundraising events and judge local science fairs to promote the engineering industry among youth.
Matthews’ involvement within St. Augustine doesn’t stop there. He also donates his time on the Service Board for Flagler Hospital, as Chairman of the Economic Development Committee for the St. Johns County Chamber of Commerce, and as Board President at the ARC of St. Johns. This commitment and dedication to his employees and the community, along with quality designs and service, are what contribute to Matthews Design Group’s solid reputation.
