The Ancient Art of Threading in St. Augustine

May 20, 2015 | Meaghan Alvarado

Threading originated centuries ago in Persia, as a sign that a girl had become a woman. This ancient art is now widely practiced across the globe, with a recent popularity rise in the United States.

Local eyebrow artist Fatemeh has mastered the art of eyebrow threading in her 36 years of practicing this beautifying service. Taught by a family friend while growing up in Persia, she has been threading since she was 19. Although very different from waxing, threading is a depilation technique with the same ultimate goal of removing unwanted hair from anywhere on the body.

Threading is literally done with a long twisted thread that is pulled tight, and then rolled across the area of unwanted hair. The twisted thread pulls and removes a row of hair every time it is rolled across the face, as opposed to tweezing that only plucks one hair at a time.

Why Threading Over Waxing?

Ultimately, the style of your brow should reflect the shape of your face. With threading, there is more control in shaping the brow. Instead of waxing off an entire strip of hair, threading allows for the practitioner to remove specific hairs for more intricate shaping.

Unlike waxing that can peel your skin, threading results in less redness. Not to say that it doesn’t cause any discomfort—but it’s not any worse than waxing, it just takes a little longer. The feeling is similar to the pulling sensation associated with plucking.

Who Should Try Threading?

Anyone can try threading. For the past four years, I’ve been having my eyebrows threaded every four weeks by Fatemeh. I will never go back to waxing my brows. My husband even had it done for our wedding.

The use of a simple cotton thread to remove the hair is a draw for anyone looking for a natural beauty regimen. No harmful products are used in the process of threading.

Before You Thread

Let your brows grow out a bit prior to your first appointment so that there is enough hair to get the shape that you want. A major perk with threading is the ability to get your desired arch. Consider bringing in a picture showing the shape of brow you like. If you don’t bring in a photo, your designer should be able to look at your facial structure and pick the best brow shape for you.

Fatemeh believes “the eyebrows are the window treatment for the eyes.” Threading may cost a little more than waxing, but it is worth it to look in the mirror and see a perfect brow shape that isn’t over-plucked.
