Just as summer heats up, cool off with these yummy sweet treats. From decadent, fudgy topped sundaes, to completely vegan, coconut-milk-based scoops, the prices are good, the service is great, and the flavors are all-around fabulous. The affordable prices, fun atmosphere, and kind people who work at these spots, only serve to make the experience even better. In a city that revolves around being outdoors and in the Floridian heat, places like these are necessary. From mom-and-pop shops to home-style chains, this list has a selection of places and flavors that are sure to satisfy your sweet tooth!
Chocolate Raspberry Truffle
Cold Cow is a local favorite, their flavors, atmosphere, and staff only adding to its glowing reputation. Of the multitude of flavors found there, the Chocolate Raspberry Truffle is absolutely to-die-for. Not only is it a flavor that I had never seen before, but it also has a very unique taste that keeps customers coming back for more. You can get it topped with rich hot fudge or any other topping that you would like. The portions are hefty but the prices are not!
Mint Chocolate Chip
A delicious take on a classic, the mint chocolate chip ice cream found at Kilwins, is absolutely amazing. The flavors are not overpowering and you can enjoy every bite. Even though Kilwins is known for their rich fudge, sticky caramel apples, and gooey chocolates, they know how to do ice-cream and do it well. The waffle cones are delicious as well, but of course, the ice-cream is superb on its own.
Reeses’ Peanut Butter Mudslide Concrete
A local favorite, Rita’s specializes in chilly Italian ices, perfect for cooling you and your family down right as you amble off the beach. They also produce cream-based desserts and of those, they produce something called a “concrete” and as the name suggests, this ice-cream dessert is thick and rich and chocked full of all things delicious. The Reese’s Peanut Butter concrete is decadent and delightful and all of the prices are easy on the wallet.
Double Fudge Brownie
Bruster’s Real Ice Cream
A nationwide staple, Brusters definitely knows what they are doing when it comes to ice cream. My favorite thing to get there is the double-fudge brownie. Sweet chocolate ice-cream swirled with fudge is good on its own. Toss in a few chunks of rich, gooey fudge brownie and you have the recipe for delicious ice-cream. This flavor is a fan-favorite and combined with the equally lovable prices, Bruster’s keeps their customers happy and coming back for more.
Almond Butter Chocolate (Dairy Free)
Mayday Handcrafted Ice Creams
If you and lactose are not best of friends, finding good ice-cream that doesn’t have dairy in it but is still creamy and delicious can be hard. Mayday has got you covered though! Their Almond Butter Chocolate ice cream is formed with a coconut-milk base, swirls of yummy almond butter, and dairy-free chocolate chunks. One could easily forget that there is no “cream” in this sweet dessert. It is so good!
Ben and Jerry’s
A nationwide favorite, Ben and Jerry’s has recently added a new location right here, in the heart of St. Augustine. Of the multitude of delicious flavors that they have there, the flavor Chocolate Therapy is one of my favorites. This chocolate based ice-cream is swirled with chocolate pudding ice cream and chocolate cookies. It is not for the faint of heart but it is such an experience for those who can finish off a well-portioned cup or cone.
Classic Banana Split
Marble Slab Creamery
Banana splits are perhaps one of the most delicious desserts out there and Marble Slab Creamery does a very good job of perfecting the American classic. Perfectly ripened bananas paired with flavorful ice creams and any type of topping your heart desires, this treat is divine. With a plethora of flavors and toppings to choose from, this creamery serves up delicious sweet treats that are matched with even more favorable prices. The drive is a little longer from downtown St. Augustine than the others, but it is definitely worth it!
