When you grow up in a small farm town in Ohio and your dad owns a country music bar, chances are you’re going to grow up to be a pretty badass alt-country rocker chick. And such is the case for 25-year-old Lydia Loveless. Check out Real, Loveless’ fourth studio album, which was released last summer on Bloodshot Records. Old City Life caught up with Loveless to ask her a few questions about playing in the Sunshine State, free music and her fandom for Kesha. Here’s part of that conversation.
OCL Have you ever been to St. Augustine?
LYDIA LOVELESS I have not. I’m looking forward to it. I haven’t been to Florida for a show in years!
OCL Sing Out Loud Festival is a free community event. Do you have any personal thoughts on music accessibility within communities?
LL I can’t think of a better mood boost than seeing a good show. It’s inspiring, and I think it has a great affect on people. It’s good when shows aren’t always at a boozy late night bar (though that’s fun, too!) and can be more accessible to all walks of life.
OCL You have a pretty rigorous touring schedule. What’s life like on the road for you?
LL Well, not so much this year. I love being on the road. It’s a good mix of productivity and escape that I find very inspiring. I don’t do well with being in one place all the time. It is, of course, exhausting and isolating at times, but so is life, I guess.
OCL You come from a musical family. Tell me a bit about that.
LL Yeah, almost everyone in my family is a musician, aside from my mom, making her the least narcissistic. My brother is in a death metal band called Shores of Elysium and my sisters are both working on projects right now.
OCL I read that you’re a big fan of Kesha. What other modern musicians do you admire and listen to?
LL I love Tash Sultana. I find her fascinating. Susto is damn good and unique. John Moreland, Jason Isbell and Childish Gambino. I’m kind of all over the place.
