Volkswagen of St. Augustine hosted its fifth annual Gatsby themed charity event at the Lightner Museum on Saturday, April 28th. Over 500 guests attended the once again sold-out event. Downtown St. Augustine became a blast from the past with attendees scattered around the museum dressed in their finest 1920s attire around the theme of “Gatsby’s Lost Generation.” Live music was provided by local musicians, Amy Hendrickson, Chelsea Saddler, Mama Blue and even Volkswagen of St. Augustine’s General Manager, Joe DiFeo, joined in by playing piano.
Another high point of the evening was the 1920s themed live characters scattered throughout the museum, such as Pablo Picasso, Ernest Hemmingway, Salvador Dali, and even Mr. Jay Gatsby himself were all dressed in costumes handmade by Sway DiFeo. Other highlights included: “Poetry on Demand” writers, a blackjack competition, a candy bar station, and a 1929 Willys-Knight Deluxe Roadster and a 1930 Lincoln Deluxe Roadster on display that provided the perfect photo opportunity.
Lightner Museum kept a wing of the museum open where guests could enter the party and enjoy a complimentary glass of champagne while discovering some of the museum’s ancient artifacts. In addition to a champagne “bubbly bar,” craft cocktails and moonshine infused in mason jars, all craft beers were generously donated by Ancient City Brewing Company. Complimentary hors d’oeuvres were also provided throughout the night by Café Alcazar.
The event was a major success raising over $25,000, all of which will be donated to local non-profit, the St. Johns Cultural Council (SJCC). SJCC is active throughout St. Johns County furthering visual, literary and performing arts for students, elderly and aspiring artists who may not otherwise have the ability to expand their creative outlets.
Volkswagen of St. Augustine owners, Joe & Sway DiFeo are passionate about supporting local non-profits and are artists and musicians themselves. The DiFeos wholeheartedly believe in supporting the arts in St. Johns County. Since opening its doors in December of 2013, Volkswagen of St. Augustine has been able to contribute well over $200,000 to local charities and continues to allocate an annual budget for community support and sponsorships.
