At a lot of large colleges, your life can become pretty insular. Everything is right there for you on campus, and venturing off the beaten college path is typically unnecessary. Flagler College isn’t like that. Being a small school in the middle of a small city’s downtown means that your resources are out in the community with the rest of the local residents. Luckily, St. Augustine is a pretty cool town to explore. Whether you’re in search of caffeine after pulling an all-nighter, craving something sweet, or just don’t know what to do on the weekends, these spots close to campus will get you through the next four years. Here’s some local advice, one college student to another.

If you’re in need of a caffeine fix…
Between classes, studying and having a social life, there’s no doubt that there will be days when you’re in need of some serious caffeine. Whether you’re just searching for a good cup of coffee to start your day, or you’re about to pull an all-nighter, don’t fear! There are plenty of places close to campus where you’ll be able to get your fix. The Kookaburra, located downtown, is the perfect stop when you don’t want to stray too far from campus, but also want a delicious latte. Just a few streets over, Relámpago is known for its smooth cold brew that will be sure to keep you awake when you need it most. While ChocoLattes is conveniently placed in the center of campus between Kenan and Pollard Hall, so no matter what direction you’re coming from (and even if you’re running late) you’ll still have time for coffee.

If you’re looking for a quick bite to eat…
Let’s be honest, sometimes we’re just not in the mood for D-hall, and if you don’t have time to run home and eat in between classes (or, like many of us, your pantry and fridge are bare), then being able to grab a bite near campus is essential. If you have time to sit down and enjoy a comforting Southern meal of breakfast or lunch, then be sure to visit The Blue Hen, located in Lincolnville, a short and pretty walk from campus that’s not dreadfully far. If you’re trying to stay close to the main campus but still need breakfast, then Schmagel’s Bagels is the place to be. Located in the center of downtown, this will be sure to keep you full until your morning classes are over. For a quick bite that’s always satisfying, make sure Taco Shop is on your radar – this cozy spot is located in the center of bustling St. George Street, they’re open late for those midnight cravings and they offer discounts to Flagler students!

If you’re craving something sweet…
Between bustling schedules, essays and exams, you’re bound to get a sugar craving to deal with all the stress. When that happens, make sure you know where to go! Mayday is the perfect escape for a scoop of creamy ice cream and homemade sprinkles that will certainly not disappoint. Cousteau’s offers hand-spun milkshakes and Belgian waffles for those days when you have 4 essays due and just don’t know how to deal. If you want something cold and sweet but ice cream isn’t your thing, then be sure to check out The Hyppo for gourmet popsicles in every flavor under the sun. And if you’re looking for something sugary, fluffy, and doughy, then grab a donut from Swillerbees. You won’t regret it.

If you want to do a little shopping…
St. Augustine has some pretty cool shops if you find yourself in need of some retail therapy (or, you know, just need something). A short walk, drive, or bike ride to uptown San Marco will offer some local favorites like Declaration & Co (clothes and adorable gifts), Anchor Boutique (gorgeous jewelry), Juniper Market (mostly coffee and cafe), some vintage and antique stores, and lots more. You’ll also find some gems in the hustle and bustle of downtown, like Yield Design‘s shop and studio and Red Pineapple. Downtown is also where you’ll find Flagler’s Legacy store (if you need anymore school merch). Any gamers in the readership will have to take a short drive to spots like Press Play Media or Not Another Game Store.

If you’re in desperate need of a Sunday brunch…
The chefs of St. Augustine are old pros at brunch, trust me. Brunch at Ice Plant, located on Riberia Street above the St. Augustine Distillery, is hip and modern despite its charmingly vintage setting. If you like your brunches a little more elevated, make your way to Bridge Street for a mimosa and some Southern staples at Preserved. A little further into downtown, you can grab a bite at the quirky outdoor eatery The Gourmet Hut, the bayfront O.C. White’s, or even the aptly named Brunch Restaurant. Head to uptown San Marco for Sunday brunch in a Victorian home, courtesy of Raintree.

If you’re looking for an afternoon of relaxation…
For those afternoons when a random class gets canceled, or you just need to take some time for yourself, there’s plenty of ways to get some well-deserved r&r. If you’re able, then go to the beach (see below for all you need to know)! Nothing beats lounging on a towel and listening to the ocean when you need to get your mind off of due dates. If you don’t have a way of transportation and need to stick closer to campus, then go have a picnic by the fort, or sit by the bayfront to read and relax. If you only have a little bit of time between classes or meetings, then head to the palm garden and lounge in a hammock for as long as you can – but good luck not falling asleep in this mini oasis!

If you’re planning a day at the beach…
There are two beaches in the St. Augustine area – Vilano Beach and St. Augustine Beach. About a 15 minute drive from Flagler, heading to St. Augustine Beach will take you over the Bridge of Lions, onto Anastasia Island, and to the city of, well, St. Augustine Beach. You can park at the pier, which will be the first parking lot you come to, or you can travel a little further up the road to one of many public parking lots. If you prefer, you can also pay a small fee to enter in Anastasia State Park, where you’ll have a small canteen and facilities. The situation is about the same at Vilano Beach, also about 15 minutes from the college. Turning right at the light over the Vilano Bridge will take you to a larger parking lot and a pavilion, whereas turning left will offer a number of public lots.

If you’re looking for a quirky place to grab a drink…
Obviously you can’t spend all your free time studying, so when you’re in the need of something to do but want to venture past the student center, you have options. Sarbez! Is the perfect place to go with friends and enjoy arcade games, cold drinks and grilled cheese in a funky space like no other. If you can’t make it over to the island, then head over to Dog Rose in Lincolnville, throw some darts and challenge your friends to a game of shuffleboard. If you’re just looking for a place to watch sports games that isn’t your dorm room, then The Social Lounge is a comfortable setting that also offers board games to keep you amused during halftime.

If you’re searching for live music…
One of the best things about St. Augustine is that we have a lot of local artists who love to play at various locations around town. If your evening is better enjoyed with live music then be sure to check out Prohibition Kitchen where there’s always a band playing. You can head over to Stogies and enjoy live music alongside a toasty bonfire when the nights get cooler. And always keep an eye on what concert is coming to The Colonial Oak Music Park, these shows are always free and always a good time.

If you’re looking for something to do on the weekends…
When you’re looking for something to do on the weekends but don’t want to spend too much money then it’s time to explore your city. The Amp offers a weekly farmers market every Saturday where you can go, walk around with friends, explore different vendors, and enjoy local food and drink. If you’re a film fanatic, head over to the Corazon Cinema and Cafe downtown to watch a movie and enjoy a meal at the same time. If you want to get a glimpse of the best view in town while exercising at the same time, then head to the St. Augustine Lighthouse where Flagler students get a discount and get a bird’s eye view of the city. And if you feel like getting a little culture, spend an afternoon wandering through the Lightner Museum – after all, Flagler students get in for free.

If you need to keep up-to-date with local happenings…
